With gorgeous scenery, fascinating history, and plenty of recreational opportunities, these amazing green spaces do so much to improve our communities and our lives. Luckily for residents of Junction City, KS, there are plenty of these amazing parks available to visit close by.
1. Sand Hills State Park
This beautiful park spans over 1,000 acres and takes in some of the most gorgeous scenery in the state. As well as the sand dunes that give the park its name, there are woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands to explore. Ample hiking trails crisscross the park, offering visitors the chance to get up close and personal with a variety of habitats and watch the wildlife that make their home there.
Campsites are also available if you’re looking to prolong your stay at the park. Sand Hills State Park is located near Hutchinson, just an hour and a half’s drive from Junction City. Find the entrance off Kansas State Highway 61.
2. Wilson State Park
If you’re looking to spend a little time by the water, Wilson State Park is the place to be. Sitting on Wilson Lake, it offers excellent opportunities for a wide range of recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy hiking around the lakeshore, fishing, boating, camping, and much more. It’s also a great spot to take a pair of binoculars and watch out for the plentiful birds that visit the lake.
Another short 90-minute hop from Junction City, Wilson State Park is located about 10 miles north of Wilson. The park has plenty of parking onsite, and a visitor center offering maps and tips for making the most of your visit.
3. Webster State Park
Another great waterside spot, Webster State Park features beautiful prairie views, excellent recreational opportunities, and an abundance of wildlife. Walk the trails and you may be lucky enough to spot turkey, pheasant, quail, and deer. Or enjoy fishing the well-stocked reservoir while taking in views of the nearby Chalk Hills.
Webster State Park is located around 8 miles to the west of Stockton. Although it’s nearly a 3-hour journey from Junction City, the beautiful surroundings mean it’s well worth the trip.
4. Cedar Bluff State Park
As the name suggests, this park is best known for its imposing limestone bluffs which tower over the walking trails, creating a unique and atmospheric area for visitors to enjoy. The park also features a large reservoir, complete with boat ramps, and fishing spots.
Cedar Bluffs is also a perfect spot for camping, with a variety of sites available for both RV and tent campers. Located a little way south of WaKeeney, it should take around 2 and a half hours to reach home.
